(Fairbanks, AK) – Alaskan Type 2 firefighting crews have been ordered to support wildland fires in California’s Klamath National Forest. Crews will begin arriving in Fairbanks on Friday to depart from Ladd Field at Fort Wainwright on Saturday.
Those leaving will be Kaltag #1, Delta #2, Fort Yukon #1, Venetie #2 and a combined Koyukuk / Galena crew. The crews of 20 firefighters each will be briefed and outfitted at the Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service in preparation for their assignments.
Record setting rains in Alaska have reduced the fire potential across the state. Before the assignment of these crews, nearly 300 personnel from DOF and the Fire Service have been assigned to fires in Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and the Canadian Northwest Territories.
DOF crews already mobilized are the Gannett Glacier and White Mountain Type 2 Initial Attack (IA) crews at the Snag Fire in Washington. The Pioneer Peak Interagency Hotshot (IHC) crew and the Yukon Type 2 IA crew are on the Beaver Fire in the Klamath NF. The Tanana Chiefs Conference Type 2 IA crew is assigned to the Eiler Fire in California. The U.S Forest Service Region 10 Type 2 IA crew is in California at the French Fire.
Crews from AFS: Chena IHC – Upper Mica Complex in Idaho; Midnight Sun IHC – Big Cougar in Idaho; North Star Fire Crew – 5 Mile Fire in Oregon. BLM Smokejumpers have been sent to Oregon and Idaho.
A minimal amount of resources are being maintained in Alaska for the chance of a fire. Human related activity remains a concern in the cause of fires. So far this year in Alaska, there have been 331 fires burning 226,851.7 acres.
