Hot, dry weather persists over the Bolgen Creek Fire

May 19, 2015, 12:40 p.m. — Dry, hot weather is persisting over the Bolgen Creek Fire burning along the Steese Highway between Central and Circle. The eastern Interior of Alaska remains under Red Flag Warnings for low relative humidities and high winds. These conditions will continue into the Memorial Day weekend.

Firefighting crews continue line construction supported by helicopters making bucket drops. Engine crews are mopping up along the highway corridor keeping the road open. There was minimal growth yesterday making the fire 555.5 acres with 15% containment. There are 158 personnel assigned to the fire.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area, keeping an eye out for firefighters and firefighting equipment on the road.

Memorial Day weekend is May 23-25 and forecasts are predicting warm, dry weather. Vegetation is dry and prone to rapid fire spread, as it is still pre-green up. The holiday weekend traditionally leads to a number of new wildfires that are accidentally or negligently started by escaped campfires, fireworks, all-terrain/off-road vehicle usage, spring debris burning/yard clean up, target shooting, and other activities.

Please consider your safety, and the safety of others; do your part to prevent human-caused fires. Make sure campfires are completely extinguished.
