May 20, 2015, 11:45 a.m. — Despite the dry, hot weather persisting over the Bolgen Creek Fire, crews have it 60% contained with no increase in acreage. The fire, burning on both sides the Steese Highway between Central and Circle, remains at 555.5 acres. The eastern Interior of Alaska remains under Red Flag Warnings for low relative humidities and high winds. These conditions will continue into the Memorial Day weekend.
Firefighting crews, yesterday, worked with helicopters rigged with buckets to cool a finger of the fire on the eastern flank to prevent potential spotting. Crews are securing the line by gridding by hand 300 ft. into the black to insure there are no hot spots. There are 179 personnel assigned to the fire.
The Steese Highway remains open. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area, keeping an eye out for firefighters and firefighting equipment on the road.
Holiday weekend forecasts are predicting the warm, dry weather to continue. Please consider your safety, and the safety of others; do your part to prevent human-caused fires.
