Alaska Fire Service gets much-needed firefighting supply delivery

[Fairbanks, AK] – On June 28, the Alaska Fire Service warehouse at Fort Wainwright received an expedited shipment of firefighting materiel from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). The enormous shipment, which weighed more than 127,000 pounds, included pumps, chainsaws, water handling equipment, prepackaged meals, fire clothing and many other kinds of durable and consumable supplies that have been in high demand for the past several weeks.

In partnership with the DLA, the U.S. Air Force offered to ferry the supplies to Alaska in a C-5 Galaxy. The ongoing Alaska fire season has created a critical need for firefighting supplies and equipment. The DLA is the normal supply source for the federal wildland fire supply system.

“Getting this equipment here so fast is terrific,” said Tami Defries, associate manager of the Alaska Fire Service in Fairbanks. “Our fire warehouse has been shipping out an impressive amount of supplies and equipment over the past few weeks, and we are glad to get this resupply.”

While fire supplies are normally trucked to Alaska from the Lower 48 states, most of this shipment was flown to Eielson Air Force Base on a C-5M Galaxy transport plane from the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base in northern California. (Some of the supplies shipped were transported on previously scheduled USAF DC-10s flights.) Eielson AFB was used as the delivery point because the Galaxy requires a longer runway than was available at Fort Wainwright.
