This fire is being managed by the Great Basin Incident Command Team 3, Mark Rosenthal, Incident Commander (IC).
Smoke makes for poor visibility for motorists traveling along the Elliot Highway. High speed vehicle traffic along the Elliot Highway, a National Scenic Byway, poses a significant safety concern to firefighters. Please slow down and watch out for fire personnel working along the roadway.
There was extreme fire behavior with crowning and spotting in black spruce that started early in the day. The western side of the fire made a run as the temperatures hit the low to mid 80’s with the humidity in the low 20’s and winds south, southeast at 7 mph, with gusts to 15 mph. Three active plumes were observed on the fire, each producing a prominent smoke column.
Due to the extreme fire behavior evacuations are in effect for the Tatalina subdivision and the Globe Creek camp.
The White Mountain Recreation Area has been closed once again because of the threat of fire. Please pay attention to the signs and stay out of the area. Wickersham Dome trail has also been closed.
The Hayes Creek and Globe Creek fires are in aerial patrol status.
Values at Risk:
The Alyeska Trans-Alaska Pipeline, fiber optic cable, Tatalina subdivision and the Elliot Highway between mile markers 33 and 34, where the fire has crossed the highway.
Threatened Structures: 28 single residences, 24 other minor structures – No evacuations at this time.
Damaged or Destroyed Structures: None, at this time.
Closures: A temporary closure of the western section of the White Mountain National Recreation Area was reinstated on Sunday, July 05. Wickersham Dome Trail has been closed.
