Middle Yukon Fires (Ruby Area Fires) update, July 20

What:  Middle Yukon Fires/Ruby Area Fires
Cause: Lightning
Location: A series of fires are located near Ruby, Alaska on the Galena Fire Management Zone and the western end of the Tanana Zone. The major firefighting efforts at this time are concentrated on 3 fires on the south side of the Yukon River near the village of Ruby.

Fire Names: The following fires are now being reported in the daily Incident Status Summary (ICS-209) as “Ruby Area Fires”:

Bruno Creek Fire#479 (15,233 acres)

Trail Creek Fire #599 (32,687 acres)

Big Creek Two Fire #533 (328,957) acres

The following fires are in monitor status:

Ruby Slough Fire #423 (49 acres)

Eldorado Fire #576 (6 acres)

Little Moose Fire #411 (761 acres)

Melozitna 2 Fire #419 (3,357 acres)

Gentian Fire #519 (14,065 acres)

Size: Approximately 395,115 acres

A public meeting to discuss the current status of the Ruby Area Fires will be held on Tuesday, July 21st at 7:00pm at the school in Ruby. Please note the location change.

Weather conditions were favorable for firefighters on Sunday. Crews were able to accomplish some good line construction to protect native allotments. Photos and video taken during aerial recon flights on Sunday evening are being processed and will be available on both Inciweb and the Facebook page for the Middle Yukon Fires. Check back regularly as these will be posted throughout the day today.

Bruno Creek Fire: Crews had good success Sunday in constructing handline on the north flank of the fire to protect native allotments. Today they will continue with direct suppression tactics on the north flank of the Bruno Creek Fire.

Big Creek Two Fire: Aerial reconnaissance flights were conducted on the east flank of the fire to locate several cabins that were showing on existing maps. Two squads are working in the Nowitna River drainage to set up sprinkler systems and complete structure protection on remote cabins on the east side of the fire.

Trail Creek Fire: Today structures crews will be installing structure protection on additional cabins and structures along the Poorman Road area.

There is a Notice to Airmen in effect for a 25-mile radius around the village of Ruby.
