Mat-Su forestry firefighters mopping up grass fire near Point MacKenzie

Wildland firefighters from the Alaska Division of Forestry’s Mat-Su Area office are mopping up a 3.2-acre grass fire reported in the Point MacKenzie area Tuesday night.
The fire was reported by a pilot near Mile 17 of Point MacKenzie Road just before 8 p.m. Tuesday. The Mat-Su Area office responded with a helitack load and two engines. The fire was about a half mile off the main road.
Upon arrival, 12 firefighters found the fire creeping and smoldering in grass and logging slash. No structures were threatened by the fire. Firefighters used backpack pumps and an engine to stop the spread of the fire. Four firefighters and one engine remained at the fire overnight, working until 3 a.m. to ensure it was under control.
Thirteen firefighters are mopping up the fire today and the fire is expected to be fully contained by the end of shift.
The fire is believed to be human caused but a specific cause has not been determined. A Division of Forestry fire investigator is investigating.
