Winds ignite coal seam wildfire east of Healy

The Alaska Division of Forestry is responding to a wildfire east of Healy that was ignited by a coal seam.

The Louise Creek 2018 Fire is estimated at 600 – 1,000 acres as of 9:30 p.m. The fire was fanned to life by windy conditions in the area and is located east of the Nenana River, approximately 5 miles from the Usibelli Coal Mine operating area.

The fire is burning in a burn scar but is finding pockets of fuel and is putting up smoke that is visible from the community of Healy and the Parks Highway.

The fire has merged with another, smaller coal-seam fire that was identified earlier in the season but is still contained by a dozer line on the west side. A helicopter has been dropping water on the west edge of the fire to keep it in check until sufficient ground resources arrive on scene.

Initial attack resources are on scene and two crews are enroute to the fire.
