Firefighters to begin structure protection effort on Ninetyeight Creek Fire

Firefighters are taking steps to assess and protect structures threatened by the 60-acre Ninetyeight Creek Fire (#391) near Salcha.  The fire was active this afternoon and was moving toward cabins.  Firefighters prioritized the east flank of the fire and used water scooping aircraft to hit it hard. They had good success and fire behavior had moderated by this evening.  There are 26 smokejumpers on the Ninetyeight Creek Fire and a hot-shot crew.  Additional crews have been ordered.  Local boats have been hired to help transport crews and equipment.  With fire crews and aircraft working in the fire area, people north of 31 mile Salcha River are advised to stay out of the area.  A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in effect over the fire.  The Ninetyeight Creek Fire was started by lightning Wednesday.
