Ninetyeight Creek Fire Update for 6-30-19

Firefighters on the Ninetyeight Creek Fire near Salcha got some help today from cooler temperatures, higher humidity, and – late in the day – rain.  The fire is still holding at 52 acres.  There was no movement of the fire; however there was active smoldering and torching of black spruce in pockets of unburned vegetation in the interior and near the perimeter. The fire is now five percent contained.

Another crew will be joining the firefighting effort tomorrow and the Gila/Las Cruces Type 3 Interagency Incident Management Team is taking command of the fire Monday morning. The Ninetyeight Creek fire was started by lightning on Wednesday about 18 miles northeast of Harding Lake.  A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in place over the area.
