Rain and mild temperatures aided firefighters Sunday afternoon and evening in their efforts to suppress the 52-acre Ninetyeight Creek Fire (#391). Personnel are focused on minimizing the fire’s growth and spread by keeping its footprint to the smallest reasonable size with minimum disturbance to natural resources. No structures are immediately threatened.

Today crews will continue to secure firelines and mop up as needed. As always, public and firefighter safety will be the highest priority. Incident responders will only commit to operations where and when they will be successful and under conditions where important values at risk are protected with the least exposure to personnel.

Cooler temperatures are forecasted today before high pressure builds back over the area. Expect temperatures to bounce back into the 80s Wednesday through the Fourth of July weekend. The public is reminded that the Alaska State Fire Marshal’s office has suspended the sale and use of fireworks in most of the state.
