The Nugget Creek fire (#323) was started by lightning on June 21 and is located approximately 35 miles east of Fairbanks in the area of 30 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road in the Chena River State Recreation Area. The fire, in a Limited Protection Area, continues to be monitored, from the air and ground.
The fire is currently at about 6,936 acres in size, with the fire spreading towards the river at mile post 34, of the Chena Hot Springs Road. Fire behavior is minimal with backing, creeping, smoldering, and some isolated single tree torching. The fire is currently .78 miles from the Nugget Creek cabin.
Alaska State Parks has closed both the cabin and the Mastodon Trail leading to it. The Mastodon Trail, trailhead, and cabin, along with the local campground are closed until further notice. The trailhead is located at mile 38.6 Chena Hot Springs Road. The Granite Tors Trail at mile 39, Chena Hot Springs Road, is also closed.
