This weekend’s warm and dry weather forecast for the Shovel Creek Fire is expected to contribute to active fire behavior. Firefighters are preparing for a firing operation on Friday to prevent the wildfire from moving south. Residents of the Vancouver neighborhood, similar to adjoining neighborhoods, should be ready to go at a moment’s notice. Pacific Northwest Team 2, managing the fire, has recommended to Fairbanks North Star Borough to issue a LEVEL 2 (SET) evacuation alert for the Vancouver neighborhood. A community meeting will be hosted by Pacific Northwest Team 2 at the Ken Kunkel Community Center Friday July 5th at 6:00pm.

The Vancouver neighborhood is located south of the Shovel Creek Fire in a rural area dominated by black spruce with approximately 57 structures. A LEVEL 2 (SET) evacuation alert means people should be SET to evacuate. This means assembling a kit of important items that you will take with you in the event of an evacuation. Firefighters are aggressively working to contain the Shovel Creek Fire while providing for their safety, and the safety of the public.

LEVEL 2 (SET) evacuation alert is not a notice to leave, but it means that you should be SET to leave at a moment’s notice. A Level 2 evacuation alert signifies that there is significant danger in your area. Get SET by gathering your 6 P’s (see below) and a 7-day kit. This may be the ONLY notice you have to finish getting ready before needing to evacuate. A call center is available for additional information at (907) 459-1308.

EVACUATION ALERTS:

An Evacuation shelter has been established at Randy Smith School (1401 Bainbridge Blvd, Fairbanks, AK) to accommodate displaced residents. Additionally, a temporary pet shelter is located at the Tanana Fairgrounds. For additional information and resources on evacuations from the Fairbanks North Star Borough, please visit http://fnsb.us/eo/Pages/EM.aspx, or call (907)459-1308.
