Mop-up efforts continue on the Montana Creek and Malaspina Fires. Crews have cold-trailed 200 feet in from the containment line on Montana Creek and 100 feet in on the Malaspina Fire. Operations Chief trainee Aaron Rowe walked the entire perimeter of the Montana Creek Fire on Thursday and reported seeing little, if any open flames in the interior. A flight using an Unmanned Aerial System was also used to identify hotspots that might not be visible from the ground. Using UAS technology not only delivers aerial photographs of areas that may be otherwise inaccessible, it also decreases exposure to risk inherent in using manned aircraft.
While the cooler weather and increased moisture have contributed to the success of suppressing these fires, it is important to keep in mind that the fire danger remains high. Fire restrictions remain in effect and everyone’s cooperation is needed in order to protect your communities and resources. Team 12 remains available to assist with any new fires that require initial attack.
Today containment increased on the Montana Creek Fire to 45%, and to 40% on the Malaspina Fire. As containment continues to rise and weather continues to cool, updates will be issued once daily.
Montana Creek – 367 acres, 45% containment
Malaspina Fire – 85 acres, 40% containment
Personnel – 232 (combined for both fires)
Cause – Both under investigation
