The Sterling Highway is open. Pilot cars may be used to escort traffic in alternating directions with flaggers at either end of the affected area between MP53 and MP75. Alaska State Troopers will be patrolling the area and monitoring traffic. Motorists are advised to proceed cautiously through the affected area, drive with their lights on and watch for firefighting personnel working in the area. Smoke may settle along the highway particularly in the morning hours due to the forecast weather. If conditions change, travel could be halted again for the safety of the public and firefighters.
The Swan Lake Fire was active yesterday south of the Sterling Highway which forced fire managers to close the highway to traffic from last night until 10:00 am this morning.
Yesterday, a dozer line was constructed on a portion of the fire between the Sterling Highway and Skilak Lake. Today, that line will be completed with hand crews. The eastern portion of the fire is not exhibiting much movement; however, the threat of fire activity is still present.
Additionally, engines are working on securing hotspots along the highway and clearing downed trees. Crews are in place on the east side to prep contingency lines to prevent the fire from moving further to the east.
