Swan Lake Fire Operational Update – September 4, 2019 – 12:45 PM

Boaters on the reopened Kenai River this morning.

Portions of the Kenai River reopened today with limited access. The river is open to boating between Cooper Landing Boat Launch to Sportsman’s Landing from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The public is reminded that boaters will be ticketed by law enforcement, if they pass Sportsman’s Landing.

Firefighters continue to make good progress with cooler temperatures and the moisture received. Mop up continues on the southwest and southern portions of the fire to assure containment lines will hold with the assistance of the drone’s infrared capacities. Crews are still clearing blown down trees along the Skilak Lake Road.

Fire crews hiked into the Resurrection Pass Trail today to build direct fire line southeast of Trout Lake in the Shaft Creek area. Helicopters are supporting crews with bucket drops as long as weather permits. Firefighters will monitor the west side, and are putting hand line where needed. The priority is still to reduce the potential for fire spread toward Cooper Landing.

A 10-person Wildland Fire Use Module will be spiked at the Doroshin Cabin for the next two days. They were able to complete hand line yesterday. Hose lay and sprinkler materials were flown in the cabin this morning. The module will be installing the water handling material today.

Fire crews continue to use chippers to reduce slash in the area and Russian Gap contingency line. Dozer line is almost completed in the power line corridor south of Cooper Landing.
