Firefighters are making excellent progress as they work to extinguish the Fish Fire (#319) on the west side of the Dalton Highway near mile marker 116.
A Type 3 incident management team from Nevada assumed command of the fire at 7 a.m. today. Incident Commander Erik Newell said crews finished setting up hoses and sprinklers around the fire perimeter last night. The fire has not grown beyond the 295 acres reported Monday night.

Firefighters are focused today on ensuring that any hotspots are extinguished. They are also checking unburned vegetation near the fire for any residual heat to prevent potential for spot fires.
In addition to having command of the Fish Fire, Newell’s Type 3 team is also responsible for managing the Curky (#318), Snowden (#330), Basin (#331), Prospect (#333), and Douglas (#336) fires. These are all in Limited fire management areas.
The smokejumpers who initially fought the Fish Fire will be brought off the line today so they can rest and resupply for their next assignment.
Arctic Circle Campground remains under an emergency closure order.
