Smokejumpers are working to protect structures and allotments threatened by the lighting-caused Sunset Fire (#369).
Smoky skies Saturday morning have prevented aircraft from supporting crews on the ground, who are focused on point protection.
Firefighters have been in contact with the staff of the Kokrine Hills Bible Camp, which is located between the fire and the Yukon River. There are about 100 people at the camp. They have decided to leave camp a few days earlier than scheduled due to the fire.
The Sunset Fire is estimated at 480 acres. It is about 60 miles upriver from Ruby. Yesterday the fire was burning in black spruce on the east side and mixed hardwood on the west side. Torching was observed, with the fire spreading primarily to the north and south. The area is experiencing hot, dry conditions with winds out of the south.
