Dalton Highway Complex prepares to transfer incident management teams

Management of the Dalton Highway Complex will be transferred from Idaho Incident Management Team #1 to California Interagency Incident Management Team #14. The team transfer will occur at 11:00 p.m. Saturday night. Information on the fires within the complex will be available on Sunday’s update.

On Friday, winds out of the east pushed both the Douglas Fire (#336) and MM 125 Fire (#441) towards the west and caused smoke impacts on the highway.  The Curky Fire (#318) remained inactive, even with this wind switch. The MM 125 Fire (#441) had a little movement yesterday and held along the pipeline right of way. The Prospect Fire (#494) continues to burn in light vegetation. The Troublesome Fire (#359) and the Huron Fire (#372) did not have a lot of activity and is forecast today to receive an abundant amount of rainfall.

Crews will continue to provide point protection over the north and south zones of the complex. Also, firefighters continue to check periodically on fires that are no longer reported on this update. This is to ensure that no additional action needs to be taken.

Idaho Team 1 would like to thank Mardy and Rio, Karelian bear dogs. The dogs are from the Wind River Bear Institute and have been providing protection to the firefighters on the north end of the complex. Four firefighters are standing, and two are kneeling in front of them. Both of the black and white dogs are between the two kneeling men.

Fire Weather (Warnings/Watches): The cooler and wetter weather pattern will persist through the weekend as a series of weather fronts pass through the Interior. Temperatures will gently trend downward through the weekend as relative humidity levels will trend upwards. Temperatures today will be 58-68 degrees and relative humidity levels will be above 40%.

Closures: Arctic Circle Campground remains closed due to area firefighting activity. The Arctic Circle Wayside (sign location) is open.

Public Safety: With fires being so near the highway, smoke conditions can change quickly. There may be temporary delays on the highway due to smoke. All drivers are urged to use caution and remember that driving with headlights on at all times is required on the highway. Stopping at any time on the highway is dangerous. The road has narrow shoulders and drops off quickly.
