The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection is offering basic firefighter training and Red Card refresher courses across the state. Registration is currently open for most classes and important registration deadlines can be found on the Forestry’s website. Spring is quickly approaching, and we ask that you share this page with people you know who are interested in protecting Alaska. In addition to these training opportunities, a record number of employment opportunities are available for those living within and outside Alaska. For those interested in working on a wildland fire crew, no experience is necessary. The basic S130/190/L180 class is designed to give you the fundamental skills of wildfire suppression. In 2023, these classes will be held in person.
Fighting fire in Alaska is physically demanding. Crew work is outdoors in conditions of heat, cold, wet, wind, dust, and smoke. Fire assignments are generally two weeks in length.

RT-130 – Refreshers & Pack Tests
All personnel that receive a Red Card from the Division of Forestry and Fire Protection must attend an annual Fireline Safety Refresher (RT-130). RT-130 is course that is facilitated by a live instructor, and must be attended live (virtual or in-person). Watching a recorded refresher is not permitted. The Fire Shelter Deployment (FSD) is required for all positions and may be completed at an in-person refresher or pack test. If you do not require a pack test for your qualifications, you must still complete a Fire Shelter Deployment at a local office.
