As of 5 p.m. Sunday, there were 161 active wildfires statewide with four new starts in the past 24 hours. So far, 326 fires have burned 538,032 acres across Alaska. Brief updates are provided for Sunday’s staffed fires within the BLM Alaska Fire Service protection area.
Deep (#213) – With continued overcast skies, cooler weather, and three-quarters of an inch of rain since Thursday, there was minimal fire activity Sunday. The crews worked to maintain structure protection efforts and create defensible space near the Lake Minchumina community. Crews also continue to monitor the fire in preparation for demobilization. The fire is 6 miles southwest of the community of Lake Minchumina. It is estimated at 16,744 acres with 55 people assigned.
Naluk (#209) – On Sunday, firefighters assigned to the Naluk Fire began pulling hose, pumps, and other pieces of equipment out of the field where it is no longer needed in preparation for demobilization. This process may take multiple days due to large amounts of rain over the past several days. Firefighters on the ground report pools of standing water in the fire area. The Burns Helitack crew two Alaska Fire Service firefighters remain on scene. The fire is about 20 miles north of Selawik in the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge and is estimated at 15,338 acres with 16 people assigned.
Main (#240) – On a late day reconnaissance flight Saturday, the crew observed smoke on the eastern and southwestern interior of the fire. On Sunday, firefighters improved existing fuel breaks around Ruby and continued protection measures around structures and allotments to the east and west of the fire. The BLM Alaska Fire Service Midnight Sun Hotshots remain on scene and are assisting with firefighting efforts. The fire is 11 miles southwest of Ruby and is estimated at 19,952 acres with 83 people assigned.
Deception Pup (#252) – As of Sunday, crews had demobilized from the fire. The fire is 3 miles west of Central and is estimated at 121 acres. This is the final update for the Deception Pup Fire.
