One new fire reported as unusually cool temperatures persist across DOF’s Northern Region

This is a report on fires occurring in Division of Alaska Forestry & Fire Protection northern protection areas, generally north of the Alaska Range. These include the DOF Prevention areas of Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok.

A new fire was detected in close proximity to the Shaw Creek Dome Fire (#326). Firefighters assigned to Shaw Creek Dome responded to the Sand Creek Fire (#356) and were able to contain and control the two-tenths of an acre fire by end of shift on Saturday night.

Unseasonably cool temperatures and rain persist across much of the region. Accumulations of one-quarter to a half inch are expected through Monday night, when another round of rains are predicted. High temperatures will drop to the low to mid 50s today and minimum relative humidity will be above 50% for most places.

There will be no regional smoke outlook unless fire activity increases.

Two fires in the DOF Northern Region remained staffed on Saturday, July 6.

Shaw Creek Dome Fire (#326) – located 19.25 miles northeast of Big Delta in a full response area. The fire is estimated to be 14.4 acres with 11 personnel assigned. Firefighters performed a full grid of the fire area on Saturday, as well as a grid of the green surrounding the fire. One spot fire was located and mopped up. Firefighting resources were reduced at end of shift on Saturday. Gridding will continue on Sunday.

Gold King Creek Fire (#276) – 46 miles south of Fairbanks in a limited response area. More accurate mapping on Saturday by an Uncrewed Aerial System (UAS/drone) reduced the acreage from 6,000 to 5747.2 acres. The fire is staffed by 27 personnel. Firefighters worked to reduce fuels near structures and construct indirect fire line on Saturday. This work will continue Sunday. There was no significant rainfall over fire #276 on Saturday and fire growth was minimal. A Temporary Flight Restriction is in place over the Gold King Creek Fire for the safe operation of firefighting aircraft. Pilots should check here, https://tfr.faa.gov/, before flying in the area.
