Smokejumpers begin point protection on Fortymile River

Two active fires are being staffed in the Upper Yukon zone, the Tsukon Fire (#382) and the Polly Fire (#435). Both are being managed under a point protection strategy.

Looking out the spotters window of a smokejumper plane, a column of smoke rises in the distance from a wildfire. To the left of the frame, the Fortymile River flows, separated from the smoke column by one and a half miles of black spruce forest.
Smokejumpers approach the Polly Fire (#435) on the evening of July 11.

Polly Fire (#435) – Smokejumpers are on the ground and have begun point protection on structures along the Fortymile River, including the Steele Creek Roadhouse. The fire is located 2 miles to the east of Taylor Highway milepost 108, and adjacent to the Taylor Creeke Trail. Weather will shift slightly on Sunday to bring winds from the west with a chance of scattered rain and thunderstorms to the area. Temperatures remain warm.  Smoke could be visible from the road between milepost 103 and 115 on the Taylor Highway, do not stop.

Tsukon Fire (#382) – A recon flight observed that the fire was most active on the northeast edge. Utilizing boat transport, the Olympic Wildland Fire Module continues point protection on structures and allotments near the fire. Point protection strategies include the removal of fuels, setting up pumps, hoses, and sprinklers. The fire received light winds from the northeast in the morning before switching to southwest in the afternoon. Temperatures rose to the high seventies throughout Saturday, accompanied by sunny skies.

The fire is approximately 1,319 acres and located between Venetie and Fort Yukon.

Runt Fire (#330) – The fire has been put into monitor status.

Fortymile Fire (#344) – The fire has been called contained and put into monitor status.
