The U.S. Wildland Fire Service is monitoring two small fires that started Thursday morning inside the Yukon Training Area northeast of Eielson Air Force Base.
The Lynx 1 (#055) and Lynx 2 (#056) fires are burning roughly 9 miles southeast of Two Rivers and Pleasant Valley, south of mile 28 Chena Hot Springs Road, in an area last burned during the 2013 Stuart Creek Fire.
The two fires were reported to be ignited during military training Thursday morning.
The Lynx 2 Fire is the more active of the two and was estimated at about 5 acres. The Lynx 1 Fire is smaller and producing scattered smoke.
Both fires are burning in exposed dead grass following recent snowmelt and are located on ridgelines with significant dead timber remaining from the 2013 burn.
The fires are within the USWFS Military Zone, which provides wildfire suppression on 1.6 million acres of military training lands under agreement with U.S. Army Garrison Alaska.
USWFS personnel conducted an aerial reconnaissance Thursday afternoon and plan to recheck the area Friday morning. Smoke may be visible from Chena Hot Springs Road, Eielson AFB, and the Richardson Highway.
