6:30 PM: Thanks to the continued efforts of the Pioneer Peak Hotshot Crew and the Mat-Su Type 2 Fire Crew, the Mastadon Fire (#131) remains at 18.4 acres and is now estimated to be 80% contained as of 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Crews will continue working to strengthen and secure the fire perimeter to reach 100% containment.

Firefighters have also begun gridding operations, systematically working inward from the perimeter to locate and extinguish any remaining hotspots, ensuring the fire is fully secured.

The Incident Commander has ordered an infrared drone for 8:00 AM on Friday morning to search the area for any potential hidden hot spots.

We have lots of aerial resources flying in the area. While personal drones may be fun to fly, remember: If You Fly, We Can’t.

11:30 AM: Resources worked late into the evening on the Mastadon Fire (#131). Due to the significant effort of the ground crews and aerial resources, the fire is now holding at 18.4 acres and 50% contained.

Firefighters continue to make steady progress throughout the day, working to strengthen containment lines and secure the fire’s perimeter.

Today’s objectives are to achieve 100% containment by continuing saw line construction and hose lay installation. Firefighters will also work to identify and extinguish any remaining hot spots near the fire’s edge to further strengthen containment.

Additionally, crews will work to reduce hazard trees. Trees damaged by fire can fall without warning, creating dangerous working conditions and posing a serious threat to personnel operating on the ground.
