The Cheenik Fire (#349) near Golovin has been contained to 1 acre thanks to the quick work of local residents.
Two smokejumpers assigned to the fire carefully checked the perimeter and found no signs of heat. They will conduct one more check tonight and another tomorrow morning as a precaution before calling the fire out.

Two smokejumpers have responded to a new wildfire about 4 miles northeast of Golovin along the Norton Sound.
The lightning-caused Cheenik Fire (#349) was reported Friday afternoon. There are structures and Native allotments within about 3 miles of the fire, but they are not currently threatened.
An aerial assessment of the fire showed it is about a half-acre in size with no flames visible. A small amount of smoke was seen coming from the heel of the fire. The area is receiving scattered showers.
