After nine water scoopers pummeled and significantly cool the Bean Fire (#362) on Sunday night, firefighters were able to make good progress and bring the fire to 90% containment on Monday.
Eight smokejumpers and the nine‑person Woodhawk Wildland Fire Module from Montana worked aggressively Monday to expand the 10% containment achieved Sunday night, despite thunderstorms that moved through the area and brought blustery winds.
Six of the smokejumpers are expected to demobilize today, leaving 11 firefighters to continue mop‑up and secure remaining heat. The operational goal is to fully contain and control the fire before transitioning it to monitor status — tentatively scheduled to happen on Wednesday.
The fire is located approximately 5 miles north of the Tanana River and Cosna Slough near Patterson Creek, and about 5 miles north of several Native allotments and cabins. These sites are not immediately threatened. The fire is burning within an area that last saw fire activity in 2015.
