Smokejumpers, Helicopters Respond to New Start

5:30 p.m. – A SMOD (suppression module) of six firefighters from Southwest Alaska has been ordered to the fire. Engine 269 and Fairbanks Area Forestry’s Helicopter 169 were released from the fire while Alaska Fire Service’s H-405AE remains onsite to provide support. Resources continue to make progress towards containment. 

2:40 p.m., August 12, 2026 – Eight Smokejumpers, two helicopters and an engine are responding to a fire about 12.5 miles west of Fox and 6.5 miles north of Ester Dome.

The .5 acre McCloud Fire (#472) is burning in black spruce with white spruce transitioning along the north edge of the fire. At this time, no structures are immediately threatened. The fire was first reported by an aircraft flying overhead.
