Closure Update: Middle Fork Fire forces closure of recreation cabin, campground and two ponds

The Middle Fork Fire (#383), burning along the Chena Hot Springs Road, has forced the closure of the North Fork Cabin and the Red Squirrel Campground; both facilities are part of the Chena River Recreation Area. Additionally, two ponds located off Chena Hot Springs Road, Mile 45.5 Pond and Mile 48 Pond, are closed for recreational use.

Recreationalists are advised to not use the Middle Fork Chena River in the proximity of the fire area (between the confluence of Chena River and Stiles Creek and the confluence of the Middle Fork Chena River and Munson Creek).

Mapped area of #383 marking closed ponds.

Smoke from the fire is causing limited visibility in the area as the fire continues to burn east of the highway and along the north bank of the Middle Fork Chena River. Drivers are advised to use caution as additional firefighting equipment and personnel will be working in the area.

The fire was started by lightning on June 26, 2022, and is estimated at 800 acres as of June 30, 2022.
