Bearman Fire #444 doubles in size, fire managers evaluate options for containment

The Bearman Fire (#444), between Ft. Yukon and Venetie just East of the Tedriinjik (Chandalar) River, grew almost 300 acres toward the North and East yesterday doubling the current footprint. With 39 personnel assigned to the incident, firefighters have been working to complete work around three nearby allotments by thinning vegetation along boundary lines and installing hose lines and pumps. This fire is currently being managed by a type 3 organization located in Ft. Yukon. The team had been optimistic and prepared that after the last several days of good weather and the end of red flag warnings for lightning, that they may have been able to take a more aggressive approach and move firefighters directly to the fires edge, but with the new growth and movement of the fire, those options are now more limited. With 5,525 lightning strikes reported yesterday and 56 active fires, managers will continue to prioritize protection of structures and allotments across the fires in the Upper Yukon Zone.
