Firefighters contain Fortymile Fire; shifting winds drive growth on other nearby fires

Today in the Upper Yukon Fire Management Zone, a red flag warning is in effect until 10 p.m. for the Yukon Flats due to abundant lightning and dry fuels. No significant precipitation has accumulated on any of the other staffed fires within the zone. An inversion of smoke persisted for most of the day, limiting some aerial operations.

Fortymile Fire (#255) – The fire has been called contained and controlled, and put into monitor status. Assigned resources have been mobilized to other assignments.

Tsukon Fire (#382) – Located between Venetie and Fort Yukon. The fire was mapped at approximately 1000 acres and has not crossed the west bank of Chandalar River as of July 7. The fire grew primarily in a northeast direction. Aerial reconnaissance during the day identified potential helicopter landing spots to be constructed, as well as several structures that are at risk and are viable for point protection strategies.

Runt Fire (#330) – Located 3 miles from the Canadian Border, the fire is staffed by six smokejumpers. The fire is being managed with a point protection strategy. Ground resources are working to achieve a 100 foot mop up depth around the perimeter of the structure, located on the northwest portion of the fire. The perimeter of the fire has merged with the Racquet Fire (#331) on the north end and has grown primarily to the east. The fire is expected to receive rain starting Monday night.
