Killey River Fire 75% contained

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) Gannet Glacier Type 2 Initial Attack Crew has constructed saw line around 75% of the perimeter of the Killey River Fire (060). They will continue to construct saw line and build hose lay around the fire that is located about 5-miles southeast of Funny River. Standing dead trees, snags, and jackstraw, downed trees make progress slow as the crew works safely to contain the fire. The snags and jackstraw trees are because the fire is within the 2014 Funny River Fire burned area. Having been able to walk around the entire fire, the size remains at 8.2-acres.

Once they have the fire contained, the crew will mop up the perimeter extinguishing all hot spots and removing any fuels that could compromise their containment line. After the perimeter is secure the crew will turn their attention to gridding the interior of the fire to eliminate all areas of heat while mitigating hazardous trees. Gannet Glacier with 19 members is the only crew assigned to the fire. Additional initial attack firefighters have been released and returned to DFFP’s Kenai-Kodiak Area Station to be ready to respond to the next fire.
