DFFP weekly wildland fire roundup for May 18 – 24

There was moderate fire activity this past week in the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) response area. Of the eleven fires only one fire, Sawmill Creek Fire (#079), became an extended attack, staffed fire.  

Mat-Su Communications Public Safety Dispatch (MatCom) was alerted to an outside fire in the vicinity of Seward Meridian and Tambert Drive located in Wasilla on Monday, May 18th. DFFP and Central Mat-Su Fire Department responded to the Seward Meridian Fire (#077) a 0.1-acre area burning in grass and brush with a low spread rate. Firefighters extinguished the fire and declared it out. 

Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center (FECC) was notified of a fire caused by a power in the area of Badger Road on Monday, May 18th. DFFP and North Star Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Badger Fire (#078) a .25-acre brush fire. Responding resources extinguished the fire and called it out. 

Forestry received a report of a fire moving to the trees in the area of Sawmill Creek Road east of Delta Junction on Monday, May 18th. For more detailed reports on the Sawmill Creek Fire (#079) please go to AKFireInfo.com. 

The Anchorage Fire Department requested mutual aid assistance for a grass and brush fire burning in the area of C Street and West 100th Avenue in Southern Anchorage on Tuesday, May 19th. DFFP launched Air Attack, Helitack and dispatched Pioneer Peak Interagency Hotshot Crew to the C-ST Fire (#081). Helitack deployed its firefighters and started bucket work to support AFD resources on scene. Pioneer Peak arrived and assisted to secure the perimeter and extinguish areas of heat within the interior of the fire. The 5.5-acre fire was contained, controlled and placed in monitor status. DFFP Mat-Su Type 2 Crew was assigned to mop up the burned area, extinguishing all areas of heat. The fire was declared out Friday, May 22nd

MatCom reported a structure fire spreading to the wildlands in the area of Cheri Lake Drive in Houston on Wednesday, May 20th.  DFFP and the Houston Fire Department responded to the Cheri Fire (#083) a 0.1-acre escapement from a burning trailer spreading in grass and hardwoods. Responding firefighters contained, controlled and declared the fire out.  

MatCom was notified of an out of control burn in the area of Colonist Drive in Butte on Thursday, May 21st. DFFP engines, Palmer Fire and Rescue and Butte Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Revere Fire (#084) a creeping and smoldering fire burning in grass behind a residence and several outbuildings. Forestry resources suppressed the 0.39-acre wildland fire while the fire departments extinguished hazardous materials. The fire declared contained, controlled and placed in monitor status.

FECC dispatched Forestry resources to assist Ester Volunteer Fire Department with a vehicle fire spreading into the wildlands near Mile Marker 344 Parks Highway early Thursday morning, May 22nd. Wildland firefighters suppressed a 20-by-30-feet fire burning in black spruce and tundra and completed a 100-feet grid around the Rosie Fire (#085). The fire was placed into monitor status.  

MatCom was notified of a grass fire burning in the area of North Engstrom and East Sheldon roads early Friday morning, May 22nd. Forestry responded to the Engstrom Fire (#086) a 0.1-acre escapement from a burn barrel. The fire was called out.  

MatCom was notified of a wildfire spreading int he median of the of the Glenn Highway at Mile Marker 32 on Saturday, May 23rd.  DFFP and Central Mat-Su Fire Department responded to the Mile 32 Fire (#088) and suppressed an 8-by-4-feet grass fire. The fire was declared out. 

FECC was notified of a small brush fire at the South Cushman Shooting Range on Saturday, May 23rd. Forestry and the Fairbanks Fire Department were dispatched to the Rifle Range Fire (#090) a 1-acre fire burning in grass. Firefighters controlled and contained the small grass fire. Realizing the potential for future fires around the range, Unified Command Incident Commanders took advantage of the response to mitigate the potential for future human caused fires by taking the opportunity to burn off the remaining dead and dried grass. The 7.5-acre fire was declared contained, controlled and placed in monitor status.

FECC was notified of a vehicle fire spreading into the wildland near Hollowell and Repp roads in North Pole on Sunday, May 24th. Forestry and North Star Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the Repp Fire (#93) a 10-by-15-feet fire burning in the duff. The fire was contained, controlled and placed in monitor status.
