Yesterday, firefighters and heavy equipment operators made significant progress constructing containment line around the Grandview Fire (#204) near Sterling, Alaska. Crews from Pioneer Peak IHC and Gannett Glacier Type 2IA are working along the eastern edges to connect handline segments. Once completed, the line will tie into existing dozer line on the western and southern portions of the fire.

Hose lays have been installed along the northern and southern edges of the incident, providing water access to support suppression efforts. As containment operations continue, firefighters are mitigating hazard trees throughout the fire area. The presence of snags can take additional time and attention to ensure personnel safety while strengthening and securing control lines.

Today’s plan is to complete the connection between handline and dozer line to establish continuous containment around the fire. Once the fire containment line is complete, crews will transition to the fire’s interior in coming days, focusing on locating and extinguishing hotspots further interior along the fire perimeter.

Fire danger remains very high with thunderstorms and lightning in the forecast for the weekend.
