Firefighters mop up, prepare for rain

Firefighters on the 547-acre Starry Fire (#234) worked 50 to 100 feet in from the fire perimeter Friday, extinguishing areas of heat.  Containment is now 70%.

There is rain in the forecast for Friday evening and a greater than 50% chance of wetting rain with thunderstorms on Saturday. Wetting rain is defined as more than a tenth of an inch of rain.

Three type 6 engines, one from Anderson, one from Fairbanks and one from the Tongass National Forest worked a section of fire that had slopped over Crescent Road on the South side of the fire several days ago. They eliminated all visible heat except for one area that is 300 feet in from the fire’s edge.

The federal contract crew, Mooseheart Type 2 Crew, gridded a 1.5-acre spot fire on the south section of the fire. The crew plans to call it out by the end of next shift.

The Fairbanks 1 Type 2 Crew cut a helispot on the east side of the fire. It is located where the Fairbanks 1 and the Clearwater Type 2 Crew are working. The helispot is still pending approval.

Due to progress and forecasted rains, this will be the last evening update on the Starry Fire unless significant activity occurs. Moving forward, updates will be posted daily.
