The Cheenik Fire (#349) located about 4 miles northeast of Golovin was declared out on Saturday morning following a third detailed check of the perimeter. Smokejumpers assigned to the fire found no remaining heat and will be released to prepare for their next assignment. The lightning-caused fire was reported Friday afternoon. Residents had it contained by the time smokejumpers arrived.
Smokejumpers have fully contained the Christmas Fire (#350), which was reported Friday evening about 8 miles east of Shaktoolik. The lightning-caused fire, estimated at 3 acres, is not threatening the community or nearby Native allotments. Firefighters could declare the fire out today if they find no remaining heat during a search of the area inside the control line.
This is the final update for the Cheenik and Christmas fires barring unexpected changes in fire activity.
