New fire near Aniak, minimal fire activity this morning

5 PM – The Owhat fire was considered contained and controlled today at 3 PM with a final size of 23 acres. Fire crews and smokejumpers worked throughout the day to put in perimeter lines and mop-up any hotspots to ensure the fire would not spread. A total of 17 people were staffing the fire in southwest Alaska.

10:30 AM – Last night around 9:30 PM, a fire was reported about seven miles northwest of Aniak, Alaska. Firefighters on scene this morning, confirmed the fire to be roughly 23 acres in size.  The fire activity this morning is minimal and perimeter lines are established around the fire. Crews are making good progress and will begin mopping up and putting out any hotspots later today. Resources currently engaged on the fire are 12 smokejumpers and five helitack crew members.
