Increased Aircraft Activity in Kaltag as Firefighters Work Toward Containment

Expect to see increased aircraft and personnel activity in and out of Kaltag today as the U.S. Wildland Fire Service continues work on the 55‑acre Notakok Fire, burning about one mile from the community.

Half of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service Type 2 North Star Fire Crew is already on the fire, with the remaining crew members arriving today. Eight of the 15 smokejumpers assigned to the incident will demobilize later today. Firefighters on scene will continue extinguishing remaining hot spots with the goal of declaring the fire contained and controlled and no longer a threat to Kaltag. Smokejumpers were able to install hose on the right and left flanks of the fire to help with mop up of hot spots.

There are numerous Native allotments within three miles of the fire. The chance of further spread remains low.

Weather conditions are expected to help firefighting efforts. Mostly cloudy skies, periods of rain, and high overnight humidity will reduce fire activity and assist with mop‑up operations.
