Statewide wildfire activity remained minimal this week, with only two new human-caused fires reported. Cool temperatures and varying precipitation across much of Alaska significantly moderated fire weather and reduced wildfire potential across the state. 

Although conditions have improved, wildfire prevention remains important. So far this year, 52% of Alaska’s wildfires have been human-caused, highlighting the continued need for responsible outdoor practices. Always fully extinguish campfires, follow local burn restrictions, and ensure equipment and vehicles are operated safely to help prevent new fire starts. 

On Tuesday, the Fairbanks Emergency Communications Center reported the Old Valdez Fire (#419), an active structure fire that had spread into the surrounding wildland near Old Valdez Trail in Fairbanks. Salcha Fire & Rescue and two DFFP engines responded. 

Upon arrival, resources reported a .5 acre fire burning in black spruce with a 100% active perimeter originating from the structure fire. Air attack, helitack, and two water-scooping aircraft were initially ordered, but firefighters on the ground were able to quickly knock down the fire, allowing all aircraft to be canceled before arrival. The fire was declared contained and controlled at 5:02 PM and will be monitored. 

On Friday, a DFFP engine reported the 1-acre Edgerton Fire (#424) creeping and smoldering in black spruce near Mile 10.3 of the Edgerton Highway. Two DFFP engines, a helicopter, and the Kenny Lake Volunteer Fire Department responded. 

Firefighters on the ground quickly knocked down the flames. When the helicopter arrived, bucket drops were no longer needed, so the aircraft instead provided aerial reconnaissance, helping crews identify any remaining hot spots or potential spot fires. The fire was determined to be human-caused. Ground resources completed suppression efforts, and the fire was declared contained and controlled at 6:53 p.m. 

This will be the final Weekly Wildland Fire Roundup for the season. Ongoing wildfire information, including current incidents and statewide conditions, will continue to be available on the Alaska Interagency Coordination Center (AICC) Situation Dashboard. If significant wildfire activity develops, additional updates will be shared as needed.
