Highlights: While crews continue focused mop-up and hazard removal along the Mukluk Fire’s southern perimeter, firefighters remain vigilant on the eastern and western edges, where pockets of heat linger. Uncrewed Aerial Systems, or drones, equipped with infrared cameras are flying sections of the fire to pinpoint remaining heat along the perimeter. Firefighters are using chainsaws to clear trees that fall across the control line or on hot spots to prevent the fire from spreading outside the established perimeter. Fire activity should remain low, limited to smoldering and creeping with the possibility of an occasional isolated torching tree. The fire is expected to remain in the existing footprint.
Operations: Thanks to the cooler weather and the around half an inch of rain that has fallen on the fire area in the past few days, crews continue to gain ground on stabilizing the burned neighborhoods.
Seven crews, each with about 20 firefighters, are focused on removing hazards and stabilizing the burned neighborhoods by extinguishing lingering heat around homes, driveways, and roads, cutting unstable trees, burning slash, and gathering woody debris for safe disposal.
A mulcher is now helping by grinding brush and woody material to clear hazards and reduce remaining fuels. A group of firefighters are working with AP&T personnel as they clear their right-of-way and repair the power grid.
Weather & Fire Behavior: Continued winds and the cooler and wetter weather will reduce how easily surface fuels burn, although it will not stop fire activity entirely. The forecast calls for northwest winds and continued drying, with a chance of isolated showers. As the area loses about six minutes of daylight each day, deeper underground fuels are less likely to dry out enough to create intense burning conditions.
