On Friday, two excavators traveled approximately three miles up the fire’s eastern flank from Red Fox Drive to begin suppression-repair work. Crews completed repairs to a helicopter landing area used during fire suppression. With an engine working ahead to cool hot spots in berms left by dozers, an excavator repaired approximately one-quarter mile of dozer line. Repair work will continue south on Saturday.
A road grader also began repairing unpaved roads affected by suppression activities. The operator is working systematically through the road system south of Red Fox Drive, starting with Sourdough Drive before moving to other unpaved roads. Grading will continue Saturday to restore roads to their pre-suppression condition or better.
Crews completed hose inspection and rolling on Friday. Hose, pumps, fittings, and other equipment will now be returned to storage so they are ready for future wildfire response.
On Saturday, firefighters will continue patrolling containment lines and checking for hot spots.
Residents traveling on area roads may encounter firefighters, road graders and other heavy equipment. Please give operators plenty of room and follow directions from crews while repair work is underway.
The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) is extending fire season in the Delta, Tok and Copper River protection areas due to continued dry conditions and an increased risk of wildland fire. The extension began Tuesday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 14.
Weather & Fire Behavior: Saturday brings a chance of scattered showers, mostly cloudy skies, and high temperatures in the mid-60s. High temperatures are expected to remain in the 60s through Labor Day weekend. Late-season conditions, including good overnight humidity recovery, shorter daylight periods and chances for precipitation, are expected to limit the potential for fire growth, even as warmer and drier conditions continue into the weekend. Suppression efforts, natural barriers and seasonal conditions are expected to keep fire behavior minimal. The Mukluk Fire has remained within its current footprint since Aug. 27.
