On Thursday, heavy-equipment operators and firefighters completed planned repairs to dozer lines and ATV trails along roads south of Red Fox Drive under the approved suppression-repair plan. Crews also finished relocating woody debris from ATV trails. The debris has been piled north of the Midnight Sun Road–Red Fox Drive intersection for the Tok Forestry Office to burn this winter, when conditions allow.
On Friday, excavators will move to the eastern flank of the fire, where the perimeter meets the eastern edge of Tanana Valley State Forest. Crews will work south along the dozer line, replacing bermed soil and vegetation on bladed firelines. This work will help restore natural contours and reduce the risk of thaw-related erosion in permafrost areas.
A road grader will also begin repairing unpaved roads affected by suppression activities. The operator will clear dirt, slash, and debris from ditches to restore drainage and prevent culverts from clogging. The grader will restore proper road crown so water drains off the downhill side rather than collecting on the road surface. Roads will be left in the same or better condition than before suppression activities began.
Firefighters will patrol containment lines and check hot spots again on Friday. Crews in camp will continue inspecting and returning hose, pumps, fittings and other equipment to storage so it is ready for future wildfire response.
Residents traveling on area roads may encounter firefighters, road graders and other heavy equipment. Please give operators plenty of room and follow directions from crews while repair work is underway.
The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) is extending fire season in the Delta, Tok and Copper River protection areas due to continued dry conditions and an increased risk of wildland fire. The extension began Tuesday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 14.
Weather & Fire Behavior: Friday is expected to be warmer, with temperatures near 65 degrees and a chance of isolated showers; however, no wetting rain is expected. The warming trend will continue with highs temperatures in the 60s through Labor Day Weekend. Late-season conditions, including good overnight humidity recovery, shorter daylight periods and chances for precipitation, are expected to limit the potential for fire growth, even as warmer and drier conditions develop Friday and continue into the weekend. Suppression efforts, natural barriers and seasonal conditions are expected to keep fire behavior minimal. The Mukluk Fire has remained within its current footprint since Aug. 27.
