The Jade Fire (#285) is fully contained following a week of hard work by firefighters and the arrival of cooler, wetter weather in the Ambler area. Firefighters who were not released from the incident on Monday, June 29, will be released today. This is the final update.

Firefighters declared the Jade Fire (#285) near Ambler 90% contained on Sunday. The area received rain from about 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which limited firefighting efforts but also greatly reduced fire activity.
Today, the Council of Athabascan Tribal Governments Type 2 Crew will continue to work toward full suppression of the fire. Their goal is to eliminate any residual heat within 300 feet of the fire’s edge. This could be completed as early as the end of the crew’s shift today. The U.S. Wildland Fire Service Midnight Sun Hotshots are being reassigned to the Big Fire (#313) near Ruby.
The Jade Fire was reported on June 23. It is 67 acres and has not reached the landfill in Ambler.
PREDICTED WEATHER: The weather today is expected to be cool with a chance of isolated rain showers. The main concern will be wind gusts up to 20 mph from the southwest. These winds will cause vegetation to dry out more rapidly in areas that do not receive rain. It is still best to avoid any outdoor burning and use caution with anything that can ignite a fire. Even a small spark can start a wildfire in these conditions.
AIR QUALITY: Smoke from the Jade Fire has not significantly impacted Ambler, but residents should stay alert to changing conditions and take steps to protect their health if smoke moves into the community. Find more air quality information at https://dec.alaska.gov/air/anpms/wildfire-smoke/. Wildfire smoke contains fine particles and other pollutants that can be harmful to people’s health. It can irritate the eyes and lungs and is especially dangerous for elders, young children, and people with heart or respiratory conditions. Even short‑term exposure can worsen breathing problems.
