Firefighters took advantage of overcast skies, brief light rain, and minimal fire activity on Saturday to increase containment on the Siruk Fire (#340), burning 23 miles northwest of Allakaket, to 60%. The fire is estimated at 619 acres.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chena Hotshots arrived Saturday and reinforced control line on the eastern flank, while smokejumpers worked to secure line on the western side. Hose lays have been established along both flanks, and this work will continue today. A total of 44 personnel are assigned to the incident.
There was no need for helicopters to drop water on the fire on Saturday, but they were used throughout the day to support the firefighters’ logistical needs. The helicopters will be available again today.
The forecast for today and tomorrow calls for high temperatures in the 80s and critically dry relative humidity around 25%. Winds are expected to remain calm, which could help limit fire activity despite the hot, dry conditions.
The Siruk Fire, caused by lightning, is burning along the Alatna River. Two Native allotments are nearby but are not currently threatened.
