Type 3 team assumes command as Mukluk Fire transitions to suppression repair

A Type 3 incident management team, made up largely of Alaska firefighters and support personnel, assumed command of the Mukluk Fire at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Working with local, state, federal and partner resources, the team will continue patrol, monitoring and mop-up operations while transitioning to suppression repair.

An approved suppression-repair plan will guide work across the fire area. Heavy equipment operators and firefighters will focus first on priority areas south of Red Fox Drive and at other locations along the fire perimeter. Work includes repairing containment lines, improving drainage, reducing erosion potential, and removing or restoring temporary fire-control features.

Firefighters continue to patrol and check containment lines and mop up around homes, roads and driveways south of Red Fox Drive. Firefighters are also burning piles of woody debris again Tuesday as conditions allow. Engines are supporting this work and monitoring the piles until they are fully extinguished. This work reduces remaining heat and helps eliminate potential sources of smoke near developed areas.

As work is completed in different areas of the fire, crews are removing hose, pumps, fittings and other equipment. Equipment will be cleaned, inspected and returned to storage so it is ready for future wildfires.

Residents in fire‑impacted areas are urged to use caution around any remaining debris. Burned structures, vehicles, and materials may contain ash, sharp metal, chemicals, and other hazardous substances. If you need to enter or work around these areas, protect yourself with sturdy footwear, gloves, long sleeves and pants, eye protection, and respiratory protection such as an N‑95 mask when appropriate.

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) is extending fire season in the Delta, Tok and Copper River protection areas due to continued dry conditions and an increased risk of wildland fire. The extension begins Tuesday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 14.

Weather & Fire Behavior: The fire area received 0.03 inches of rain Monday. Tuesday is expected to be partly cloudy and breezy, with a chance of morning snow showers mixed with light rain. Cool, wet weather is limiting fire activity, but some smoldering and slow-moving fire may continue in deep organic soil and heavy fuels.
