Mukluk Fire suppression repair advances as crews restore fire lines and reopen trails

Suppression-repair activities are underway across the Mukluk Fire area under an approved repair plan. On Tuesday, heavy-equipment operators and firefighters made significant progress repairing dozer line south of Red Fox Drive. Excavators are replacing bermed soil and vegetation on bladed fire lines to restore natural contours and reduce the potential for thaw-related erosion in permafrost areas.

Firefighters have completed backhauling equipment from across the fire area. Crews in camp are now cleaning, inspecting and returning hose, pumps, fittings and other equipment to storage so it is ready for future wildfire response.

Firefighters continue to patrol containment lines and check hot spots. This work reduces remaining heat and helps eliminate potential sources of smoke near developed areas.

Suppression-repair work also includes identifying and clearing ATV trails along containment lines and within the burned area south of Red Fox Drive. Crews are working to keep established trails open and passable by removing berms, slash and other obstructions and addressing severely uneven ground. Where trails were widened to create fire lines, crews will narrow them to their pre-fire width where practical.

Residents in fire‑impacted areas are urged to use caution around debris. Burned structures, vehicles, and materials may contain ash, sharp metal, chemicals, and other hazardous substances. If you need to enter or work around these areas, please take the necessary precautions.

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) is extending fire season in the Delta, Tok and Copper River protection areas due to continued dry conditions and an increased risk of wildland fire. The extension began Tuesday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 14.

Weather & Fire Behavior: Expect mostly cloudy, breezy and cool conditions Wednesday, with a chance of light rain in the morning. High temperatures are expected to reach only around 49 degrees. Cool, wet weather is limiting fire activity, but some smoldering and slow-moving fire may continue in deep organic soil and heavy fuels.
