Mukluk Fire suppression repair nears completion south of Red Fox Drive

Suppression-repair activities are nearing completion south of Red Fox Drive on the Mukluk Fire under an approved repair plan. On Wednesday, heavy-equipment operators and firefighters made significant progress repairing dozer line and restoring ATV trails along roads.

On Thursday, excavators will continue repairing dozer line and clearing ATV trails south of Red Fox Drive. A dump truck will remove woody debris along the trails. Suppression-repair work south of Red Fox Drive is expected to be completed Thursday.

Firefighters will patrol containment lines and check hot spots again on Thursday. This work reduces remaining heat and helps eliminate potential sources of smoke near developed areas. Crews in camp will continue inspecting and returning hose, pumps, fittings and other equipment to storage so it is ready for future wildfire response.

Residents traveling on area roads may encounter firefighters, dump trucks and other heavy equipment. Please give operators plenty of room and follow directions from crews while repair work is underway. Road graders will also be working to smooth potholes and restore proper road crown as suppression repair work is completed.

The Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DFFP) is extending fire season in the Delta, Tok and Copper River protection areas due to continued dry conditions and an increased risk of wildland fire. The extension began Tuesday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 14.

Weather & Fire Behavior: Thursday is expected to be dry, with highs near 56 degrees. Friday is forecast to be warmer, with temperatures near 65 degrees and a chance of isolated showers; however, no wetting rain is expected. Late-season conditions, including good overnight humidity recovery, shorter daylight periods and chances for precipitation, are expected to limit the potential for fire growth, even as warmer and drier conditions develop Friday and continue into the weekend. Suppression efforts, natural barriers and seasonal conditions are expected to keep fire behavior minimal. The Mukluk Fire has remained within its current footprint since Aug. 27. Despite a warming and drying trend forecast later this week, late-season conditions are expected to continue limiting fire behavior.
